Mo Salah has set the league alight and is currently winning the race for Golden Boot, having racked up of 31 strikes this season. The Egyptian has won the PFA Player of the Year in his first season back in the Premier League. Considering all this, Chelsea has come under scrutiny for selling Salah before even giving him a proper chance to prove his worth.
He arrived from Basel in January 2014 and made 19 appearances for the Blues, scoring just twice. Consequently, he moved to Italy. First to Fiorentina and then to Roma. Seeing his triumphant return to England, Chelsea’s transfer policy has come under scrutiny once again.
However, Antonio Conte has defended his club’s decision. He said:
“It’s not so simple because we have to compare Salah from over four or five years ago to this Salah. I think Salah in the present improved and developed a lot. I think the Italy experience was very important for him and now I’m sure he is a different player compared to the past.”
“For this reason, I think it’s very difficult to have this comparison.”
While Salah has continued his incredible scoring run, Chelsea has suffered from a lack of consistent goalscorer. Conte bemoaned lack of a ”top scorer” while praising the two frontmen at his disposal. He added:
“This season, for sure we are struggling to have a top scorer on our team. It’s important to score if you start the game or if you come on during the game.”
“I think they [Morata and Giroud] played a great game against Burnley and they showed me that I have another option – to play with two strikers. They showed a great link between them.”
“I have two strikers in good physical condition and I think it is very important for the final part of the season.”
