Aston Villa captain John Terry has said that he does not believe that his former club Chelsea should pay more than £55 million if they want to sign Virgil Van Dijk.
“I think it was a big statement to put him on the bench for the game with Chelsea,” Terry told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
“If they [Southampton] are demanding £60m, if I were Chelsea I would be saying more like £55m if he’s not getting in their starting XI.”
The Premier League Champions have been strongly linked with a move for the Dutch international as they look to improve their squad for the second half of the season.
Van Dijk appears to be one of the most sought after players in the English top flight at the moment and has also been linked with Manchester City and Liverpool.
Van Dijk was close to moving to Liverpool during the summer for a fee of £70 million, however the Reds were forced to end their interests after Southampton threatened to report them for tapping up.
